01 Elevators & Lifts
LU/LA Elevators
LU/LA stands for limited use, limited application. It is a code category under ASME A17.1 that sits between a residential elevator and a full commercial passenger elevator, built for public buildings with light traffic that still need real accessible service.

02 How It Works
Drive type and what installation takes.
Where it fits in the code
A LU/LA carries up to 1,400 lb, travels up to 25 ft, and runs at 30 fpm. Those limits are what allow a smaller hoistway, a shallower pit, and a much lower installed cost than a commercial passenger elevator, while still satisfying the accessible route requirements a platform lift can only partly meet.
Drive and machine space
Most LU/LA units are hydraulic with a machine room or a machine room-less controller in a cabinet at the top landing. Hydraulic keeps the pit shallow and makes manual lowering straightforward during a power outage, which matters in a building where the public rides.
Cab and doors
The cab is a finished enclosure with an automatic power door at each landing, not a gate you hold open. Standard platform is 42 in by 60 in, which accommodates a wheelchair with an attendant. Controls, handrails, signals, and phone all follow ADA placement.
What installation involves
A framed or masonry hoistway, a 14 in pit in most configurations, and a dedicated circuit. From delivery, installation typically runs one to two weeks including door frames and finishes, followed by a state inspection before the building can put it in service.
